Job Description
Role Summary: The Ship Safety Officer will be responsible for ensuring and maintaining high safety standards on vessels, particularly in relation to marine insurance claims and risk assessment. This role requires a deep understanding of maritime safety regulations, risk management principles, and the ability to conduct thorough inspections and investigations. The officer will work closely with the insurance underwriting and claims departments to mitigate risks and ensure compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of vessels to ensure compliance with international and national maritime safety regulations (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL).
Develop and implement safety management systems and procedures tailored to maritime operations.
Investigate marine incidents, accidents, and near misses to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
Assess risks associated with vessel operations and cargo handling, providing recommendations to underwriters and clients.
Prepare detailed safety reports, including findings, recommendations, and follow-up actions.
Deliver safety training and awareness programs to vessel crew and relevant stakeholders.
Liaise with regulatory bodies, port authorities, and classification societies on safety-related matters.
Stay updated on changes in maritime safety legislation and best practices.
Advise the claims department on technical aspects of marine insurance claims related to safety failures.
